Humans evolved on Earth, and through the evolution of intelligence and a prodigious birthrate became the dominant species on the planet. Over time, humans developed the technology to advance into space and began a diaspora across the galaxy, managing to progress from the Industrial Age into the Space Age in roughly three hundred years.
In the year 1914, the Mondoshawan revisited Earth, as they must have before, to retrieve the elements of a specialized weapon created to destroy the physical manifestation of Evil; World War I was underway, and the aliens feared the elements might be destroyed. At the time of the removal of the four Elemental Stones and the bronze sarcophagus containing the hibernating body of the Fifth Element, the Mondoshawan commander promised the priest of the temple where the elements had been stored they would return in 300 years when Evil returned. An accident resulted in the commander's death, but as he died, he granted the priest the key to the vault for when it was needed in the future.
Humans are noted for the variety of colors they display, from palest white to richest ebony, and everything in between, humans' volatile natures caused them to be both admired and feared. This nature is what gave them the edge in fighting against, and then defeating, the Mangalores. Political maneuvering caused the break up the Mangalore Empire, and the united Earth government forced them out of their home star system, scattering its people.
An interstellar government began to form after that, and the Federated Territories came into existence. The military might of the territories was unified into the Federated Army, which includes a fleet of space-faring warships.
The majority of characters in The Fifth Element are human.
